New research reveals that patients who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals purchasing such medications must be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a return to starting mass in about 18 months.
Comparing Approaches
The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting typically have a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Experts believe the mode of action of the jabs explains the accelerated rebound.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
People who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if something activating and you become extremely hungry," said an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Interest
Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Use is more common among females than men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss relies on combined behavioural support.
