The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
